Vastu Shastra literally translates into ‘science of architecture’. It is an art of balancing the positive and negative energies of a house. Five elements of vastu shastra – earth (bhoomi), water (jala), fire (agni), air (vaayu), and space (akasha) should be in sync with each other to ensure a vastu compliant home. These days, most constructions are vastu compliant which gives homeowners the assurance and sense of security. The science is not, however, new. Vastu shastra references are made even in age-old scriptures as old as the Rig Veda. As per vastu experts, the main factors that attribute to a happy and prosperous home include suitability of the location according to our stars (astrology), directions (for instance, north-facing or east-facing), the soil on which the property is or to be constructed, the day on which the construction begins or foundation is laid and finally, the nakshatras of the homeowners (one’s birth stars). For a house to become a home, you want the right kind of energy to radiate in it. Furniture Rearrangement

Rearranging Furniture as per vastu

Oftentimes, there is not much you can do about a house unless you plan a complete makeover. For instance, the positioning of the main door or gas stove or the washroom could be incorrect as per vastu shastra. In such cases, you can make do with rearranging your furniture by moving them around or by discarding them completely. Keep your entrance as decluttered as possible. Avoid shoe racks outside your home and right in front after opening the door inside. Place some plants next to the door and avoid putting up any animal figurines except for two elephants with their trunks upwards. Arrange the sofa set so that they face in the north or east direction. Add teak or sheesham wood furniture into your living room pieces. They strengthen the aura of the space. For those who are building their own houses, the number of doors and windows play a major role – doors should always be in even numbers and not odd.

Kitchen & Dining Area

Designing Kitchen & Dining Area according to Vastu

Most important place in a house is the kitchen area as it is directly connected with the wellbeing of the lady of the house. Hence, it is very crucial to position the area for the prosperity and health of the family. The kitchen and dining area is where it is believed to have an inflow of health and prosperity. A clean, organised, and decluttered kitchen not only helps you spot things sooner, it also radiates positive energy. The right placement of the gas stove is in the south-east direction and you should cook facing east. Try to incorporate a wooden dining table and chairs, and stay away from dark colours while setting up the dining area. Opt for square or rectangular pieces and accentuate your dining space with flowers to enhance the aura.

Study Room

Designing Study room for positivity and motivational energies

Your study room is where you spend your most productive hours, now more so than ever. Thanks to the lockdown, most of the world has shifted its working module to their respective houses. Hence, the need to spruce up your study so as to make it more positive and in turn, more productive. For maximum productivity, set up your work stations facing east. You can also put up pictures of flying aeroplanes or birds on the northwest wall for positivity and motivational energies.

Bedroom

bed position in the bedroom as per vastu

Your sleeping and bed position makes a lot of difference when it comes to tackling Vastu Doshas of your home. The recommended sleeping position is lying down with your head facing the east or south. As per Hindu traditions, it is believed that the mortal remains of a person are positioned in a way such as his/her head is facing the north. However, scientifically, it is said that when you sleep with your head pointing towards the north, your body’s magnetic field interferes with that of the earth. This in turn affects your blood pressure, causes tension, and stress. Sleeping with your head towards the south direction (or east) ensures you get a night of sound sleep, and declutters and de-stresses your emotional state of being. If you can change the position of the bed so that the headrest faces the east, then great, or else, you could always change your sleeping position as mentioned. Mirrors should be on the east or north wall and should be covered while sleeping at night.

Coloured Tiles

Using coloured tiles as per vastu

If you are on a budget, you can make do with cosmetic changes like replacing the old tiles with new, good quality, coloured Orientbell tiles. Colours play a huge role in Vastu Doshas too. Every colour has its own significance when it comes to vastu and you can utilise that factor. For instance, you can go for yellow coloured tiles in the pooja room, avoid red or deep yellow colours on the main door or entrance, instead go for white, silver or wood-look tiles. For the study room, you can go for pastel coloured tiles like light blue, green or cream.

Miscellaneous

  • Wells, tanks, water pumps, septic tanks, bathrooms, and staircase should not be there in the southeast corner. These can cause stress, health issues, monetary problems, and an impediment to studies.
  • Place your brooms in a sleeping position in the southwest corner of the house. It will enhance prosperity.
  • Fish tanks should be placed only in the living room and family room in the northeast corner and nowhere else. It brings in peace, happiness, curbs illness and unwanted expenses in the family.
  • Heavy items like almirahs, cupboards having important documents, cash, and jewellery should always be in the southwest direction. Similarly, light things in northeast directions.

A home is where our heart is therefore, homeowners make every possible effort to make the space happy, warm, and filled with positive vibes. If you are redoing or starting fresh in a new house, make sure to get the aura cleaned before moving in.
